While we mark our nation’s 250th birthday this weekend, here’s a fun slice of Oregon history. Discover how Portland’s name was decided by a simple coin flip—Boston nearly won—and how charging $5 per wagon on Barlow Road was an early precursor to modern tolling proposals like those for I‑205.

Don’t forget to stop by Max Patterson Park on Saturday July 4th for the annual Police and Fire Community BBQ. Hot Dogs will be provided from noon- 2 pm (or until gone). Gladstone’s Fourth of July celebrations bring fun and community spirit, but they also come with important safety considerations—especially for pets. Local fire officials urge residents to follow Oregon’s fireworks laws, use only permitted consumer‑legal fireworks, and keep children and pets at a safe distance to prevent injuries and reduce wildfire risk.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend.

Jacque M. Betz
