Purpose and Mission

To enhance the quality of life and the present and future health, safety, and welfare of all residents, to enhance property values, and to ensure proper planting and care of trees on public property.

Exciting News: Gladstone Earns Tree City USA Distinction!

We are Thrilled to announce that, as of January 23, 2025, the City of Gladstone has officially earned the Tree City USA distinction! This recognition celebrates our community’s commitment to preserving and expanding our urban tree canopy, helping to created a greener, heathier environment for current and future generations.

Being designated a Tree City USA Demonstrated our city’s ongoing dedication to protecting and nurturing our natural surroundings. This accomplishment reflects the tireless efforts of our residents, the City Council and the Tree Board Ad-Hoc Committee, with invaluable support from the Oregon Department of Forestry.

What this means for Gladstone:

As a Tree City USA, Gladstone pledges to maintain and enhance our tree coverage, which provides numerous environmental benefits including cleaner air, climate resilience, healthier communities, a more vibrant community and a healthy urban environment.

Administered by the Arbor Day Foundation, The Tree City USA program recognizes cities and towns that meet rigorous standards for urban forest management. Standards such as:

A community Tree Board or Department – Dedicated to the care and upkeep of trees in our city.
- The City of Gladstone’s Tree Board consists of Kim Baller, Eric Butler, Linda Cosgrove, Sandy Dittmar, Nancy Eichsteadt, and Justin Prouty
A Tree Care Ordinance – A formal policy ensuring responsible care and management of our urban trees.
- The Gladstone City Council approved Ordinance 1537 – An ordinance adding Title 11 to the Gladstone Municipal Code Establishing Regulations for Trees on Public Property.
Annual Arbor Day Observance – A celebration of trees and environmental stewardship in our community.
- In partnership, the City of Gladstone and Friends of Gladstone Nature Park (FOGNAP) hold an annual Arbor Day event at the Gladstone Nature Park located at 18111 Webster Rd., in Gladstone.

Gladstone's White Oak Savanna

Gladstone is located in the heart of a once-vast native habitat dominated by Garry Oak trees (quercus garyanna). This unique ecosystem, which once stretched from Eugene in the south to Vancouver Island in the north, was shaped by frequent fires that cleared the underbrush, allowing these resilient trees to thrive. Today, due to extensive development, less than 3% of the original Garry Oak population remains.
